Bu dersin amacı, insan bedeni ve üremenin antik dönem, ortaçağ ve çağdaş dönem toplumlarındaki yerini eleştirel bir yaklaşımla incelemek ve toplumsal yaşamdaki günümüz beden tartışmalarının daha iyi şekilde anlaşılmasını sağlamaktır.

Bu dersin temel tartışma konuları ve öğrenme çıktıları: aydınlanma, akıl ve rasyonellik; üreme norm, tutum ve pratiklerinin toplumsal inşası, üreme ve üreme hakları (örn. kürtaj, doğum, taşıyıcı annelik ve yumurta/sperm bağışı, gey ve lezbiyenlerin çocuk sahibi olma hakları); Üremeye Yardımcı Teknolojilerin (ÜYTE) toplumsal etkileri, tasarım ve kurtarıcı bebekler, bekaret, korunma; kısırlık; ölüm; emzirme; sünnet; kadın sünneti; engelli ve sağlıklı olmak; tecavüz; onam; insan hakları; ve etiktir. |

Mills'in (1959) önemli eseri olan Sosyolojik Tahayyül adlı kitabında vurguladığı gibi, "onlar [sıradan insanlar] kendileri ile dünya, biyografi ve tarih, birey ve toplum arasındaki önemli ilişkileri kavrayamazlar. Kişisel sorunlarıyla da, genellikle onların arkasında yatan yapısal dönüşümleri kontrol edemeyecekleri için baş edemezler. Ancak sosyologlar, bu sorunlarla, yapısal dönüşümler, tarih ve politika bağlamında analizler yapmak suretiyle baş edebilirler.
Toplumlar ve bireylerin kişisel üreme deneyimleri arasındaki ilişkileri sosyolojik bir perspektifle ele alarak bu ders, toplum ve bireyler arasındaki bağları temel bir toplumsal yaşam alanı kapsamında incelemektedir. Bu ders aynı zamanda, üreme ve beden konularını, bu konuların doğası gereği interdisipliner bir yaklaşımla ele almaktadır.
